The origin of the word freelance dates back to Medieval times when errant knight adventurers would compete in dangerous tournaments on behalf of whichever kingdom paid the highest price for their services. A knight’s worth and wages were determined by the prowess and mastery of their combat skills. The climax of these thrilling competitions was always the heart-pounding jousting event, in which armored knights mounted on galloping horseback would battle with heavy, spear-like lances. Hence the term, freelancer, which came to mean, skills for hire. This high-stakes model of employment was later adopted by all manner of skilled journeymen adventurers throughout the world — from cooks, cowboys and ship captains to poets, bards and artisans.  Today the skills have changed but the goals are largely the same — Master your craft.
